How Long Does Underwear Last?

How long underwear lasts depends on several factors – particularly the material, construction, frequency of use and proper care. Neither inexpensive nor particularly fine underwear is automatically “better” or “more durable”.

What matters is what the underwear has been designed for – and how it is worn and cared for in everyday life.

Short answer

The lifespan of underwear can range from a few months to several years. It depends primarily on the material, frequency of wear, friction and care.

Why durability does not depend on price alone

Inexpensive underwear often uses thicker, more robust fabrics and construction designed with durability in mind. This can make such garments highly resistant to wear – although sometimes at the expense of comfort and a finer feel.

Why fine fabrics can wear more quickly

High-quality underwear often uses particularly fine and lightweight materials. These provide excellent comfort and a very smooth surface. However, because the fabric is finer, friction can cause it to show signs of wear sooner. This is not necessarily a quality defect, but can be a consequence of the emphasis on comfort and lightness.

Which factors affect the lifespan of underwear?

  • material (robust vs. fine)
  • friction during everyday wear (e.g. movement or sitting)
  • frequency of washing
  • washing temperature and care
  • drying method (heat vs. air drying)

Frequently asked questions

Is expensive underwear automatically more durable?

Not necessarily. High-quality underwear is often finer and more comfortable, but its delicate fabric structure may show signs of wear sooner.

Why does underwear develop holes?

This is often caused by friction, stress on the material or unsuitable care – and does not necessarily indicate poor quality.

When should underwear be replaced?

It is generally time to replace underwear when its fit, elasticity or comfort has noticeably deteriorated.
